Touched  base with Adam on Monday evening. He was in Gaitlinburg , escaping the howling winds and cold .He connected with some generous section hikers and shared warm lodging and meals with them.      Thanks for taking care of  my son!      The local outfitters are assisting him with his equipment issues so hopefully those will be resolved by Hot Springs.Despite the cold weather in the Smokies he still sounds upbeat.          .

Well, we spoke with Adam on Friday morning, April 20 th and he was getting ready to head into the Smoky Mountains. He had a few equipment problems which I"m sure he"ll detail later on. He's not sure if the Stray Dog Pack will remain together, but we feel a connection to Lindy and John now, so we'll continue to monitor their blogs and keep track of them. I hope he meets more folks that are as nice as they have been to him. I sent his USB cable in his last care package so he'll be able to post more photos. Most of his previous stops have rather old computers that didn't have camera card readers.I didn't realize how much we  rely on technology until my wi-fi connections didn't work on vacation and I wasn't able to get Adam's check-ins on a regular basis. Yes, I know I'm an anxious mom. It should be 70-80 miles through the Smokies so hopefully we'll hear from him again when he's through there.

Musings from Franklin

The stray dog pack went out for Mexican food last night. We had Margaritas. We are now taking a zero day. The rest is needed not just because of the drink but we are still getting use to hiking every day. I've heard countless times that it takes at least three weeks to get used to the trail, it seems to be true. There will be plenty of time to hike high miles and speed up later on, but for now i'm enjoying the characters I meet, the company I keep and the unique experience of living on the trail with great new friends. The hospitality that hikers get when off the trail is amazing. Hitchhiking to town I never wait more than five minutes (don't worry, I never Hitch a ride alone, I'm being safe) and every ride I've gotten so far has been from backpackers and outdoors-men from the area, mostly Scouters. This morning we attended an all you can eat pancake and bacon breakfast for hikers put on by the local Baptist church, they picked us up at the motel, fed us, took pictures and gave us envelopes with note paper to send pictures home (you'll be getting a letter from me with my breakfast picture pretty soon, Mom), and brought us back to the motel; all free of charge. Right now i'm hanging out in a coffee house/pub called Rathskeller, it's a great little hang out with good music playing, a small reading library, foosball, and an amazing Bohemian atmosphere. For  lunch we ate at a little retro-dinner that made me long for home. It had a 50's something skyblue and white   Chevy parking in front and the music was the same oldies stuff Dad would play in the car when I was younger. I had an grilled cheese with american fries. The whole situation pulled me back in time reminding me of the Prospect Dairy Bar, the type of place I know my father would love to take us. I know i'm still getting used to this adventure because my mind tries to find these connections to the familiar  no matter what i'm doing. Not sure who said it but one of my favorite quotes is "Life is nothing, if not change" So far this trip fully embraces that sentiment. Until next time...

Franklin, NC & Photos

Staying at Franklin, NC tonight. It has been below freezing for the past two nights. Warm enough that we are safe, but no one is sleeping well because of the noise from the howling wind. My friend Lindy is having some knee troubles so we headed into town for the night.  Back on the trail tomorrow, no zero day in this town. I just finished my first 100 miles on the AT today!! I have some pictures of my friends to post that I thought you might like.

My first trail post

         I'm seven days in to my hike and I've traveled 78.4 miles. Georgia is some tough ground to cover, a lot of elevation changes; but as hard as the uphills are, walking downhill for 3 miles is more painful. The weather has been extremely warm, 70-80's, and very sunny. The first two days on the trail I forgot sunscreen and got a little sunburn on my right arm and mostly on the right side of my face and neck; only the right side because the trail always kept the sun on that side of me. Two days ago, April 6th, was foggy and rainy. Until about 4pm I could only see 100ft ahead of me. Having a lot of fun so far meeting a lot of new people. Almost everyday the camps I've stayed in have 20-30 people camped out.
        I've met a great group of people that are so much fun to hang out with. My trail buddies at the moment are Lindy and Pesky Beaver (his trailname) the 3 of us are sharing a motel room for our zero mile day here in Hiawasee,GA . We've been calling ourselves the stray dog pack, mostly because one person. The SherpaMaster and his sons Sherpas 1,2,3 kept giving us their extra food (snickers, trail mix with chocolate, Twinkies and starburst) so they didn't have to carry the weight. So we kept hanging around them for days like a bunch of stray dogs. They were great folks who added a lot to all our conversations out here. They were only on the trail for the boys spring break, so they aren't hiking anymore.
        Another fun thing about the trail is Trail Magic, free food and drink along the trail, and Trail Angels, the people that bring it for hikers. Two particular Angels, Gordo and Moo, camp along the trail for a week every year feeding hikers. Moo drives down from Wisconsin and Gordo is from GA. This event was called the 'feast in the forest' and it was. It was raining and foggy as I walked up to a small camp. What I found was hot dogs and marshmallows to roast over the fire, grilled cheese with tomato sandwiches, hash browns with eggs and cheese, coffee, hot cocoa, fruit, salad, candy, and 2 kegs of PBR. That was just what they put out for breakfast!! They had driven a 10 foot trailer FULL OF FOOD up a US Forest Service road into the woods to just to fuel us hungry hikers. All they wanted in return was for us to sign their trail register and eat as much as we could. These were not the only Trail Angels I have to thank, just the most spectacular.
        I have plenty of pictures and more to say about them, but the motel computer is old and slow so they'll have to wait for next time. Until then everyone have a happy Easter Sunday.

Heard from.Adam today, after he arrived at Neels Gap,Georgia. Met up with a nice group of fellow hikers at Springer Mt. and have been trekking together. Active bear sightings around, but so far he's safe! Enjoying himself, resting up and restocking food .

For all of you friends tracking Adam's progress here's a piece of housekeeping. He had to name his personal GPS and we named it Wilson, in homage to The Castaway, so when you see that prepared message from Wilson its Adam checking in. Just click on the link and zoom in to see where he is.
Before we left, Devin shaved his head  in preparation for the journey and as Adam said, "he now looks like a serial killer, and will never do that again"

Okay, we set off for Georgia on Thursday evening, March 29.2012 and made it there for Friday night. Adam signed in at Amicalola Falls State Park on  Saturday March 31,2012 as the 7th  thruhiker of the day and # 618 of the 2012 season. 

We had an emotional good-bye and he began his 8 1/2 mile  approach to the official start of the AT at Springer Mountain  at 9:15am.
 He made his first official check-in after he registered their at 1:45.
